Lately there has not been much fire activity to speak of in Ridley Township, but Thursday morning that would change. At 0130 on Thursday morning, the box assignment was dispatched to the 300 block of Swarthmore Avenue in the Folsom section of Ridley Township for the house fire reported in the basement. Crews arrived to find a dryer off in the basement with heavy smoke conditions throughout the house. The engine company made quick work of the dryer fire, and the truck company ventilated the structure. The Air Unit from 70 was requested, and once on scene, the crew of five filled bottles and assisted in removing the burned out dryer from the residence. Once all the work was done, the crew was released by 18 command and returned home.

After a few short hours of sleep, the sleep-in crew was awakened around 0930 for another request for the air unit, this time to assist on a working fire in Woodlyn. Crews from Woodlyn, as well as the rest of the box assignment, were operating in the 1800 block of Toth Dr. on a residential basement fire. Eddystone Engine 12 and Squrt 67 had arrived to find smoke showing and a room off in the basement. Once the Air Unit arrived on scene with a crew of four, the driver took care of filling bottles while the rest of the crew went to assist the units operating on the fire. The crew was sent to the basement by command (Chief Poltrock)to relieve the first in crews and once inside, secured the power to the house and performed overhaul for about a half an hour. Once the work had been completed and all the bottles filled, the crew was released by command. During the fire the Engine was requested by Chief 67 to cover Woodlyn’s first due from Station 70. An additional crew of three was available to respond with the Engine to any additional emergencies in Leedom and Woodlyn.
